Flex Builder 2

Last night I installed Flex Builder 2 and I wanted to share my install experience. It could not have gone more smoothly! I have already been using Eclipse, 3.2 at time of install, so I used the Flex update package. If you don’t already have Eclipse installed then you would want the complete version with the IDE. The most important piece of advice I can offer is to read the install documentation carefully before you begin. A couple of notes: Edit If you need to update CF Upgrade Coldfusion 7 to 7.0.2 Shut down all CF Services Make sure all Anti-virus and Firewalls are disabled Sum total I spent less than an hour downloading and going through the install procedure, including the CF update. On first look the coolest part of Flex Builder is the quantity of documentation. Following that I was blown away by the included component explorer and style explorer. The style explorer is especially cool in that the tool is dynamically creating CSS. Flex Builder 2 looks absolutely fantastic. I am so stoked to start working with it. Technorati Tags: Flex

A New Perspective on Functionality

I was participating in a discussion of functionality in Web design the other day. Paul Wogan provided a unique perspective and one of the best quotes I have heard in a long time.
“It's important to differentiate functionality from functionality. Both an axe and a can opener are functional in opening a can”.
The more I think about it the more sense it makes. It does not matter weather you are working on your house, your car, or building a Web site; there are always multiple tools to get the job done. However, there is usually only one correct tool for a specific task.
Thanks Paul!
